Pretoria, At least 12 people were killed as a result of the floods cause by heavy rains on the eastern coast of South Africa. Local authorities reported that nine people died in the Eastern Cape province, while more than two thousand people were evacuated from Nelson Mandela Bay. Near the coastal city of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal province, local government reported that five people died in the Metro town, which was the most affected, while dozens are receiving treatment for their injuries in health care facilities. Regional authorities declared a state of emergency in KwaZulu-Natal, as areas are also suffering from power outages. The city of Durban and its surrounding areas witnessed the worst floods in the history of South Africa in 2022 which caused landslides that claimed the lives of more than 400 people, and caused damage costing millions of dollars. The Meteorological Institute indicated that South Africa is currently experiencing an air pressure system with heavy rains and a cold wave, which may lea d to hail, snow, and strong winds.
