18 Killed in Landslide in Central Java, Indonesia

Doha: The death toll from a landslide in Central Java, Indonesia, has risen to 18. The Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency reported Monday that more than 30 people are still missing, and that at least 16 houses were damaged by the landslide.

According to Qatar News Agency, the first landslide occurred last Thursday in three villages in the coastal district of Cilacap, about 400 kilometers east of the capital, Jakarta. Six people were killed and 17 others were missing after prolonged heavy rains softened the soil and caused it to collapse.

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) indicates that the rainy season, which began last September and continues until next April, increases the risk of floods and landslides in several parts of the country.

The city of Pekalongan in Central Java witnessed a landslide in January caused by floods, which resulted in the death of at least 25 people.
