4.6-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Central Iran

Doha: An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale struck Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province in central Iran on Thursday.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Iranian National Seismological Center said in a statement that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 12 km.

The Director of the Emergency Department of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province commented that so far no reports of losses resulting from the earthquake have been received, stressing at the same time that measures are continuing to assess the situation in the area of the incident.

Iran lies on a geological fault line and is often exposed to earthquakes. The deadliest of these occurred in 1990, when a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the northwest of the country, leaving 37,000 dead and 100,000 injured.
