Doha: An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck the Tarapaca region in northern Chile on Thursday.
According to Qatar News Agency, the US Geological Survey stated that the epicenter of the quake was located 44 km from the town of Camina, at a depth of 116 km. So far, there have been no reports of material damage or human losses as a result of the quake.
Chile has a history of seismic activity, including a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake in 2010, which was followed by a tsunami that devastated central and southern Chile, resulting in the loss of 500 lives. The country is situated in the "Ring of Fire," an arc of faults surrounding the Pacific Ocean basin, making it prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
