5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southwest China

Zhaotong: A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck Zhaotong City in Yunnan Province, southwest China, on Monday.

According to Qatar News Agency, the China Earthquake Administration reported that the earthquake occurred in Qiaojia County at a depth of 10 kilometers. Residents of several neighboring counties felt strong tremors as a result of the seismic activity.

The agency stated that there have been no reports of casualties so far. The recent earthquake adds to a history of seismic events in the region, as last December, a 5 magnitude earthquake struck Zunyi County in Nagqu City, Xicang Autonomous Region, also in southwest China.

China frequently experiences earthquakes and strong tremors, particularly in the mountainous areas of the western part of the country, making the region one of the most seismically active in the world.
