Doha: A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea on Sunday.
According to Qatar News Agency, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 46 kilometers from the city of Lae, at a depth of 65.9 kilometers. Fortunately, no casualties or damage have been reported following the seismic event.
This tremor followed another earthquake that measured 6.2 on the Richter scale, which struck off the coast of New Island in Papua New Guinea on Saturday. The region is known for its seismic activity due to its position along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a hotspot for earthquakes and volcanic activity.
In February 2018, Papua New Guinea experienced a devastating earthquake that resulted in the death of at least 100 people. The earthquake triggered massive landslides, burying dozens of villages and displacing thousands. The recent quakes serve as a reminder of the region's vulnerability and the importance of preparedness in mitigating the impacts of such natural events.
