Baghdad: An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck northeast of Easter Island in Chile Tuesday.
According to Qatar News Agency, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km, with its epicenter located 382.5 km northeast of Hanga Roa. There were no immediate reports of a tsunami or damage.
In January 2021, two powerful earthquakes struck coastal areas of Chile minutes apart. The first measured 7.1 on the Richter scale, while the second measured 5.6. Chile lies in the "Ring of Fire", an arc of fault lines that surround the Pacific Ocean basin, and is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
