5.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Eastern Japan

Tokyo: A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Honshu Island in Japan on Wednesday.

According to Qatar News Agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 31 kilometers. The EMSC had previously reported the magnitude as 6.5 and the depth as 57 kilometers.

There have been no immediate reports of damage from the recent earthquake.

A previous 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Aomori in northeastern Japan last Monday, triggering tsunami warnings and evacuation orders. The Japanese Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported 23 injuries, one of them serious.

Japan lies at the intersection of four tectonic plates, making it particularly vulnerable to seismic activity. It is also home to more than 100 active volcanoes.
