A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck on Thursday northeast of Melonguane in Talaud Islands District, North Sulawesi Province, in northern Indonesia. The epicenter of the quake occurred 40 km from Melonguane, at a depth of 30 km, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Indonesia. There have been no reports of casualties or material damage as a result of the quake so far. Indonesia is regularly exposed to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire where many tectonic plates meet and cause frequent volcanic and seismic activity.
