Rabat: The Algerian national team defeated their Sudanese counterparts 3-0 on Wednesday in their opening match of Group E at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, currently being held in Morocco. Riyad Mahrez scored twice for Algeria in the 3rd and 62nd minutes, while Ibrahim Maza added the third goal in the 85th minute. Sudan finished the match with ten men after Salah Adel received a red card in the 39th minute.
According to Qatar News Agency, with this victory, Algeria top the group on goal difference ahead of Burkina Faso, who defeated Equatorial Guinea 2-1 in an earlier match in the same group. Sudan remains without points. This is Algeria's first win in the tournament since their victory over Senegal in the 2019 final, securing their second title. They had failed to win a single match in the previous two editions of the tournament.
The Algerian national team will face their Burkinabe counterparts next Sunday in Rabat. In contrast, the Sudanese national team will play against the Equatorial Guinean national team on the same day in Casablanca.
