Casablanca: The Sudanese national football team is set to face Burkina Faso in a critical match on Wednesday in Casablanca, as they vie for the runner-up position in Group E during the third and final round of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations.
According to Qatar News Agency, neither Sudan nor Burkina Faso had secured qualification for the round of 16 before this match. However, both teams benefited from the outcomes of Groups A and B, clinching their spots as two of the four best third-place teams to advance, along with the winners and runners-up from all six groups.
In Group A, the Comoros, and in Group B, Angola, finished the group stage in third place with two points each. Meanwhile, Burkina Faso and Sudan both have three points, placing them ahead in the race for advancement.
Sudan, who were crowned champions in the 1970 edition, kicked off their campaign with a 3-0 defeat to Algeria but bounced back with a 1-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea. Under the guidance of their Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah, the Sudanese team is aiming for a second tournament win, a feat they haven't achieved since last December.
On the other hand, Burkina Faso is eager to regain momentum after their impressive seven-match unbeaten streak was halted by a penalty-kick loss to Algeria.
