Doha: Sudan's Sovereign Council Chairman General Abdel Fattah Al Burhan met with Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, to discuss ceasefire efforts and the delivery of aid amid intensifying clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
According to Qatar News Agency, Al Burhan stressed Sudan's commitment to working with the United Nations, particularly on humanitarian issues. He urged international agencies to respect the country's sovereignty and national interests, citing recent atrocities in El Fashir as a point of concern.
Fletcher described the talks as constructive, noting that discussions focused on ensuring humanitarian access across war-hit areas. The meeting underscored the importance of collaborative efforts to facilitate aid delivery in regions affected by ongoing conflict.
In addition to meeting with Al Burhan, Fletcher also met with Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohieldin Salem and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, who is visiting Sudan. The meetings aimed to review ceasefire proposals and explore potential solutions to the escalating conflict.
The conflict, which has now entered its second year, continues to spread from Darfur, seized by the RSF last month, into neighboring Kordofan. The situation remains critical as efforts to establish peace and deliver humanitarian aid are ongoing.
