Doha: Al Gharafa and Al Shamal posted victories in the opening round of the Qatar Women's Basketball League for the 2025-2026 season, which features the participation of the country's leading women's teams: Al Gharafa, Al Adaam, Al Shamal, and Al Khor.
According to Qatar News Agency, in the first match, Al Gharafa edged past Al Adaam by a narrow margin of 62-61. Despite a strong performance from Al Adaam, who are participating for technical and developmental purposes with their results not counted in the league standings, Al Gharafa demonstrated composure and control in the decisive moments to secure their first two points of the season.
In the second match, Al Shamal defeated Al Khor 85-71, reflecting their readiness and strength at the start of the campaign. The league is being contested in a three-round format, with four teams taking part: Al Gharafa, Al Adaam, Al Shamal, and Al Khor.
Competition is expected to intensify over the coming months as regular rounds continue, with fierce rivalry for the league title, which will be awarded to the club that accumulates the highest number of points at the end of the season. A playoff game may be held in the event of a tie.
Second-round matches are scheduled for Friday, 13 February 2026, with Al Khor facing Al Gharafa and Al Adaam taking on Al Shamal. The third round will be held on Tuesday, 17 February 2026, featuring Al Gharafa versus Al Shamal and Al Khor against Al Adaam.
The second stage of the league will begin on Friday, 20 February 2026, with Al Adaam meeting Al Gharafa and Al Khor playing Al Shamal. The second round of the second stage will take place on 22 February 2026, with matches between Al Gharafa and Al Khor, and Al Shamal and Al Adaam.
The second stage of the competition will conclude on Sunday, 1 March 2026, with two matches bringing together Al Shamal and Al Gharafa, and Al Adaam and Al Khor. The schedule for the third stage will be announced at a later date.
