Kuwait city: Al Rayyan defeated Iraq's Gas Al Janoob 3-1 in their match Friday, as part of the fourth edition of the West Asian Volleyball Federation Men's Club Championship, currently being held in Kuwait and continuing until February 14, with the participation of 11 clubs. The set scores were 25-17, 23-25, 25-21, and 25-17 in favor of Al Rayyan.
According to Qatar News Agency, Al Rayyan topped Group A with five points, followed by Gas Al Janoob in second place with three points. Oman's Majees team were eliminated from the tournament after finishing third with no points. Al Rayyan, the reigning champions for the past three editions, began their campaign in this year's tournament with a 3-2 victory over Oman's Majees, while Gas Al Janoob defeated the Omani champions 3-0.
Meanwhile, Al Wakrah will face Lebanon's Shabab Al Batroun on Saturday, in the third round of Group B matches. Al Wakrah suffered two defeats in their opening matches, losing 3-0 to Bahrain's Al-Ahli and 3-2 to Kuwait's Al-Kuwait. They are looking to secure their first win of the tournament tomorrow to keep their hopes of advancing to the next round alive.
It's worth noting that the tournament draw placed Al Rayyan of Qatar in Group A, alongside Oman's Majees and Iraq's Gas Al Janoub. Group B comprises Al Wakrah of Qatar, Lebanon's Shabab Al Batroun, Kuwait's Al-Kuwait, and Bahrain's Al Ahli. Group C consists of Saudi Arabia's Al Ittihad, Bahrain's Dar Kulaib, Oman's Al Seeb, and Kuwait's Burgan.
The quarter-final matches will begin next Tuesday, which will see Al Rayyan (first in Group A) face the second best third-placed team, while the second-placed team in Group B will meet the second-placed team in Group C, the first-placed team in Group B will meet the best third-placed team, and the first-placed team in Group C will meet the Iraqi Gas Al Janoob (second in Group A).
