Doha: HE Secretary-General of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRIs) Sultan bin Hassan Al Jamali highlighted the critical need for ensuring a safe and inclusive digital space for children and adolescents, noting the dual role of digital platforms as avenues for learning and communication and as sources of cyber threats, particularly in conflict zones lacking legal and digital protections.

According to Qatar News Agency, Al Jamali addressed the 25th General Assembly of ANNHRIs in Doha, with the annual conference held in Bahrain, focusing on the theme of protecting children in the digital space. He pointed out existing legislative and regulatory gaps, emphasizing that technological advancements outpace legislative efforts, necessitating integrated institutional responses and partnerships to safeguard children's rights.

The Secretary-General remarked on the importance of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) as key players in promoting rights, citing the Paris Principles of 1993 which empower NHRIs to act both nationally and internationally. He stressed the need for supporting these institutions and aligning efforts with Sustainable Development Goal 16, which aims to build strong, inclusive institutions.

Al Jamali stated that the conference's theme underscores ANNHRIs' dedication to addressing digital challenges, filling legislative gaps, and forming effective partnerships to protect vulnerable groups. The event featured discussions and sessions aimed at formulating recommendations to improve digital governance and support national institutions.

The Secretary-General affirmed ANNHRIs' commitment to supporting member institutions and collaborating with United Nations entities, states, international organizations, and civil society. He expressed the Network's belief in the unity of human rights globally and its dedication to upholding rights outlined in the International Bill of Human Rights, including the Fourth Geneva Convention.

Al Jamali concluded by reaffirming ANNHRIs' commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause, advocating for the Palestinian people's rights to self-determination and accountability for human rights violations.

During the General Assembly, the presidency of ANNHRIs transitioned from Jordan's National Centre for Human Rights to Bahrain's National Institution for Human Rights. HE Minister of Social Development of Bahrain Osama bin Saleh Al Alawi praised ANNHRIs' efforts, noting the conference's role in enhancing cooperation to protect children's rights amidst rapid digital changes.

Former Chairperson of ANNHRIs Samar Al-Haj Hasan and HE Chairperson of Bahrain's National Institution for Human Rights Eng. Ali Ahmed Al Derazi emphasized the conference's importance in addressing the digital challenges facing children and the need for continuous legislative development and effective protection mechanisms.
