Cairo: The Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level, during its 165th ordinary session held today via videoconferencing, has unanimously approved the nomination of Ambassador Nabil Fahmy, Egypt's candidate, for the position of Secretary-General. Fahmy is set to succeed the current Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, whose term concludes in June.
According to Qatar News Agency, Ambassador Jamal Rushdi, the Official Spokesman for the Secretary-General of the Arab League, revealed that the meeting resulted in a recommendation for Fahmy's nomination. This recommendation will be presented to Arab leaders for endorsement at the upcoming Arab Summit.
Ambassador Rushdi also highlighted discussions during the session that centered on recent developments related to the Iranian file. The council expressed its concern over Iran's attacks on several Arab states, adopting a declaration that reflects a unified Arab stance. This declaration rejects and condemns these attacks, emphasizing solidarity with the affected Arab countries, and dismisses any justifications for actions that violate state sovereignty.
Moreover, the council referred to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817, which has garnered support from over 136 UN member states. The resolution condemns Iranian actions that encroach on the sovereignty of several Arab nations. It also rejects Tehran's policies concerning the obstruction of maritime passages, such as the Strait of Hormuz, viewing these actions as threats to international peace and security.
