Ashghal and Al Khalij Cement Company Partner to Recycle Wastewater Sludge in Qatar

Doha: The Public Works Authority 'Ashghal' has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Al Khalij Cement Company (AKCC) to recycle all sludge produced by wastewater treatment plants across Qatar.

According to Qatar News Agency, this collaboration was formalized in a ceremony attended by HE Minister of Municipality Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah, Chairman of the Board of Qatari Investors Group Abdullah bin Nasser Al Misnad, and HE President of the Public Works Authority 'Ashghal' Eng. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al Meer, along with representatives from various relevant entities.

The initiative aims to implement circular economy principles in Qatar by converting between 744,000 and 1.29 million tons of sludge into clean energy over five years. This move transforms previously discarded sludge into a valuable resource through sustainable treatment and complete recycling, addressing disposal challenges and reducing carbon emissions.

HE Eng. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al Meer emphasized Ashghal's dedication to environmental sustainability, stating that the partnership reflects their commitment to recycling wastewater and using treated water for irrigation and cooling, as well as utilizing solid byproducts in cement products.

Abdullah bin Nasser Al Misnad highlighted the partnership's alignment with sustainable growth goals, focusing on integrating alternative fuels and renewable materials to reduce emissions and protect natural resources, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.

This agreement is part of Ashghal's broader strategy to develop sustainable waste management solutions, with the authority already recycling 98 percent of treated wastewater for agricultural and environmental purposes within Qatar.
