A bomb exploded in a teahouse in a village in northeast Nigeria, killing 19 people and wounding two dozen more in the second major attack in a few weeks, security sources said on Thursday. The Wednesday night blast in Kawuri village in Borno State was one of the deadliest in recent years in northeast Nigeria, according to local authorities. They noted that similar incidents had occurred in the area in recent days, stressing the escalation of tension and the spread of fear among the general population of the northeastern part of the country. This attack came after militants killed 32 people in the Gwoza area, also in Borno State, weeks ago when they targeted a wedding, a hospital and a funeral, without any group claiming responsibility for the explosion or the Gwoza attacks. Armed groups have been active in northeastern Nigeria for more than ten years, where their conflict with authorities has forced tens of thousands of residents to leave their homes, claimed the lives of about 36,000 people, and left mor e than seven million people in need of humanitarian assistance.
