Riga: The Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia announced today that they have successfully completed a switch from Russia's electricity grid to the EU's system. The three countries had just hours earlier begun the process of disconnecting from the Russian electricity grid, which they had been part of for decades.
According to Qatar News Agency, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the switch as a victory for European freedom and unity. Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia had stopped buying energy from Russia following Russia's military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022. However, they continued to rely on the Russian grid to control frequencies and stabilize networks to avoid power outages.
