HE Minister of State for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment in the People's Republic of Bangladesh Shofiqur Rahman Choudhury stressed that the visit of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani to Bangladesh marks a significant milestone in the dynamic relations between the two friendly countries. Commenting on the visit of HH the Amir to Bangladesh, His Excellency told Qatar News Agency , "indeed it marks a significant milestone in the dynamic relations between the two friendly countries," adding that it will pave the way for further and enhanced cooperation in various fields, particularly providing a strong impetus for further collaboration in in the area of labor and employment. He indicated that cooperation with regards to employment has experienced a qualitative leap in the last few years, with the Bangladeshi community becoming one of Qatar's largest communities, playing a crucial role in strengthening bilateral ties. His Excellency added, "through their hard work, dedication, and active participation in various sectors, Bangladeshi workers contribute significantly to Qatar's development. Their presence fosters cultural exchange and understanding, leading to new avenues for cooperation and partnership." HE Shofiqur Rahman Choudhury said, "the Bangladeshi community in Qatar, and the wider GCC region, makes a substantial contribution to the economy of Bangladesh. Their remittances play a vital role in boosting Bangladesh's economy and improving the livelihoods of their families back home." "In the 2022-2023 financial year, the remittance sent from Qatar to Bangladesh was USD 1.45 billion, which was USD 1.34 billion in the 2021-2021 financial year," he said, adding that for the last two financial years, Qatar is the 8th largest country in sending remittance to Bangladesh. "Over the past three decades, the Bangladeshi community has integrated seamlessly into Qatari and Arab society, leaving positive impressions through their hard work in development, active cultural exchange, and contributions t o various sectors," His Excellency pointed out, stressing that, "their respect for local customs and traditions, coupled with their skills and expertise, have earned them admiration and respect within the community." He noted the development of Qatar's legislative system regulating the labor market by saying, "Qatar is the pioneer in the Middle East to reform its labor law to protect workers' rights," citing reforms such as the fixation of minimum wages, the introduction of the Wage Protection System, the facilitation of changing employers, among others. "These reforms have helped improve labor standards, enhance worker welfare, and promote social justice," His Excellency said, adding that, "though there are still some limitations, the Qatari labor market may be characterized by its continuous efforts to address emerging challenges." He expressed his country's appreciation of the care and interest shown by the State of Qatar towards expatriate communities, including the Bangladeshi community, through initiat ives like the establishment of the Qatar Visa Center, an almost free healthcare system, and zero income taxes for work visa holders, in addition to conducting community-based awareness program and campaign on current issues and fostering a safe working environment. His Excellency stressed that these initiatives provide expatriate workers with a positive experience, expressing confidence that this commitment to well-being will continue to strengthen the relationship between Qatar and its expatriate communities. HE the Bangladeshi Minister of State for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment said that strong communication channels exist between his Ministry and Qatar's Ministry of Labour, adding that these channels facilitate collaboration on issues related to Bangladeshi workers' welfare and ensure that proper follow-up mechanisms are in place, in accordance with bilateral cooperation. Regarding the Qatar Visa Center in Bangladesh, His Excellency said that it plays a significant role in protecting work ers' rights. "It streamlines procedures and ensures proper documentation before workers depart for Qatar, minimizing the risk of exploitation," he added, pointing out that the center provides comprehensive services, including visa processing, medical examinations, and orientation programs, ensuring that workers are well-informed and prepared for their employment in Qatar." His Excellency indicated that Bangladesh is aware of the challenges that will face the labor market in the coming years, in light of the competition for skilled and qualified workers, saying, "we recognize the need to equip Bangladeshi youth with the skills and qualifications required for the evolving Gulf labor market, which is increasingly knowledge-based." "Our Ministry actively promotes vocational training programs aligned with the demands of the Gulf market; ensuring Bangladeshi workers remain competitive in securing skilled jobs," he added. HE the Bangladeshi Minister of State for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment conclude d his statements to QNA by stressing that his country's partnership with Qatar is built on mutual respect, cooperation, and shared aspirations for prosperity and development, adding that Bangladesh remains committed to further strengthening these relations and ensuring the well-being of its citizens.
