China Voices Rejection of New US Tariffs

China: China voiced Friday its opposition to what it described as protectionist measures that harm the interests of all parties, following US President Donald Trump's announcement of steep new tariffs on imports from 69 countries.

According to Qatar News Agency, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun told reporters at a regular press briefing that China firmly and consistently rejects the imposition of such tariffs, adding that tariff or trade wars ultimately benefit no one.

An executive order signed by the U.S. president outlines that the new tariffs will take effect in seven days, ranging from 10% to 41%. They will apply to countries such as Canada, Brazil, India, Taiwan, and Switzerland, including 35% on Canadian goods, 50% on Brazilian goods, 25% on Indian goods, 20% on Taiwanese goods, and 39% on Swiss goods.

The statement noted that this move is part of President Trump's broader effort to reshape the global economy ahead of the deadline he set for negotiating new trade agreements.

Regarding China, the deadline to reach a deal on tariffs with the US administration has been extended until Aug. 12, following preliminary understandings reached between Beijing and Washington in May and June to halt the exchange of high tariffs and suspend exports of rare earth metals.
