CPJ Reports Record High 129 Journalists Killed in 2025

New york: The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) announced that 129 journalists and media workers were slain in 2025.

According to Qatar News Agency, CPJ stated in a report issued Wednesday that more than three-quarters of the killings occurred in conflict settings, with Palestinian journalists accounting for over 60% of the 86 members of the press killed by Israeli fire during the year.

The report also highlighted an increase in the number of journalists killed in Ukraine and Sudan in 2025 compared to the previous year. It noted that four journalists were killed in Ukraine, marking the highest annual number of press casualties in the Russia-Ukraine war since 15 journalists were killed in 2022.

The committee emphasized that journalists are increasingly at risk due to the continuing culture of impunity, citing the absence of transparent investigations into the killings.

The death toll in 2025 represents the second consecutive annual record for journalist fatalities and marks the deadliest year since CPJ began collecting data more than three decades ago.
