Doha: The death toll from the collapse of a school in East Java, Indonesia, has risen to 65, as rescue teams continue to search for missing students more than a week after the disaster. Indonesia's Search and Rescue Agency announced on Monday that additional bodies were recovered over the weekend, while several students remain unaccounted for. The collapse occurred on September 29, when concrete walls and floors gave way, burying hundreds of students-mostly boys aged 12 to 19-inside a century-old prayer hall at the school in Sidoarjo, East Java.
According to Qatar News Agency, the National Disaster Management Agency reported that more than 97 students were treated for various injuries, with six still hospitalized in serious condition. Tons of debris have been cleared, but search efforts remain challenging due to the structure's instability. Search and Rescue chief Muhammad Syaugi stated that operations would continue until it is confirmed there are no more victims under the rubble.
Local police revealed that two additional floors were being constructed illegally atop the original two-story building, without the required permits-causing a structural failure that led to the collapse.
