Katara: The Katara Cultural Village Foundation, in collaboration with the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), hosted the second meeting of directors of opera houses and theaters from 15 Arab countries, as part of the activities of the founding session of the Arab Opera Festival.
According to Qatar News Agency, the meeting addressed the follow-up to the previous session's outcomes, particularly the launch of the "Arab Opera Houses Portal." This interactive platform aims to facilitate the exchange of experiences and expertise in various aspects of opera and its subgenres, with the goal of building Arab artistic and creative capacity.
The gathering also focused on developing an action plan to coordinate the exchange of performances between Arab opera houses and theaters. Participants discussed several proposals for funding and producing joint Arab operatic works. Attendees praised Katara's designation as a "City of Arab Opera" and its role in hosting the annual opera festival and meetings of relevant institutions in Arab countries, in collaboration with ALECSO.
The meeting concluded with the adoption of key outcomes, including that the theme of the next session will be "The Economics and Management of Arab Opera." Training courses for the next session will emphasize composition, conducting, and performance.
In parallel, the inaugural Arab Opera Festival concluded with a joint performance by the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra and the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Ahmed Atef. The festival, which took place from December 8th to 10th, featured 15 Arab opera houses and included numerous events, such as operatic performances, the launch of the "Arab Opera" online platform, the unveiling of a model of "Katara: City of Arab Opera," and a tribute to Egyptian composer Omar Khairat. Two training workshops were also conducted, attracting a large number of interested individuals and members of Arab opera houses.
