Drones Fly Over Base Housing Nuclear Submarines in Western France

Brest: France announced Friday that drones flew over the L'lle Longue peninsula naval base in the west of the country, which houses nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines belonging to its nuclear deterrent force. The French Gendarmerie stated in a press release that drones flew over the L'lle Longue peninsula base in the Bay of Brest on Thursday evening. They explained that five drones were detected over the site, prompting the activation of the anti-drone and search system.

According to Qatar News Agency, the marine battalion responsible for protecting the base fired on the drones. The statement noted that this base, which is protected by 120 members of the maritime gendarmerie in coordination with the marines, provides maintenance for France's four nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, which are constantly rotated at least once at sea to ensure nuclear deterrence.

For its part, the Atlantic Maritime Directorate reported that the military prosecutor's office in Rennes would open a judicial investigation into the matter. It is worth noting that there has been an increasing number of reports of drone flights over airports and other sensitive sites, including military installations, in recent months in Northern Europe, with leaders of the countries involved accusing Russia.
