Brussels: European Union (EU) member states approved Monday a gradual ban on Russian natural gas imports until the end of 2027. European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen said in an official statement that the EU is entering an era of complete energy independence from Russia.
According to Qatar News Agency, she emphasized that the EU's energy re-invigoration plan contributes to diversifying European energy sources and protecting the bloc from past energy crises. She added that the aim of the decision is to completely end dependence on Russian energy imports and reduce the funding Russia receives through energy exports, including gas.
Hungary and Slovakia opposed the decision, while the EU affirmed that the legislation is legally binding and provides a clear framework for ending Russian gas imports while maintaining security of supply. The decision stipulates a gradual halt to imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG), with a complete ban by Dec. 31, 2026, while gas imports via pipelines will end by Sep. 30, 2027, with the possibility of extending the date until Nov. 1, 2027, in special cases related to securing supplies before winter.
