European Stock Indices Close Higher Amid Gains in Travel and Leisure Sectors

London: European stock indices closed higher Monday.

According to Qatar News Agency, the pan-European Stoxx 600 index experienced a 0.1 percent rise at the close of the trading day. The German DAX index saw a more significant increase, rising by 0.58 percent.

Travel and leisure stocks were the standout performers on the Stoxx 600, with major gains reported. Ryanair shares surged by 4.8 percent following the Irish low-cost airline's report of strong demand across Europe. Other notable gainers included Lufthansa, with shares rising 2.6 percent, and easyJet, which saw a 3.2 percent increase.

BNP Paribas shares climbed 3.4 percent, marking one of the largest gains after the bank announced a share buyback plan worth euro1.08 billion (USD 1.21 billion).

In contrast, shares of luxury goods companies faced declines. Moncler shares dropped 2.2 percent, and LVMH experienced a 1.1 percent decrease, attributed to Chinese retail sales data for April falling short of expectations. Volkswagen shares fell significantly by 5.2 percent, positioning them at the bottom of the Stoxx 600 index.
