Brussels: The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaya Callas called today for restraint and respect for international law in Venezuela, following US President Donald Trump's announcement of the arrest of his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolas Maduro.
According to Qatar News Agency, Callas said in a post on "X" platform that she had a phone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during which she stressed that the principles of international law and the UN Charter must be respected, and that the EU calls for restraint.
Earlier today, US President Donald Trump announced the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife and their removal from the country. Trump wrote in a post on the Truth Social platform: "The United States of America successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela and its leader. US law enforcement authorities were involved in the operation."
