Doha: Flamengo manager Filipe Luis expressed his satisfaction after his side's 2-1 victory over Mexico's Cruz Azul in the Americas Derby, securing a place in the semi-finals of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Qatar 2025.
According to Qatar News Agency, Luis said he was pleased with how Flamengo handled a strong opponent known for its possession-based style. He noted similarities between the teams' approaches but praised his players for maintaining defensive balance and controlling the second half. Despite moments of fatigue, he said the squad showed determination to continue their campaign.
The Brazilian added that Flamengo would now turn their full focus to the semi-final against Pyramids FC, acknowledging the strength of the Egyptian champions.
Meanwhile, Cruz Azul coach Nicolas Larcamon voiced disappointment at the defeat and his team's exit from the tournament, saying individual errors proved costly. Larcamon said he would analyse the team's season and discuss his future with the club, expressing willingness to stay on.
Flamengo, the reigning Copa Libertadores champions, will face Pyramids on Saturday for a spot in the December 17 final against Paris Saint-Germain.
