Doha: The State of Qatar, in partnership with the United Nations, hosted the First Leaders' Meeting of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty on Monday, ahead of the second World Summit for Social Development 2025. The event brought together more than 350 delegates representing nearly 90 countries.
According to Qatar News Agency, HE Minister of State for International Cooperation, Dr. Maryam bint Ali Al Misnad, emphasized Qatar's commitment to development for peace and stressed the global responsibility of ending hunger and poverty. She praised Brazil's initiative to launch the alliance during its G20 presidency and noted the challenges of extreme poverty affecting over 700 million people worldwide.
Dr. Al Misnad highlighted Qatar's efforts under its National Vision 2030, focusing on a diversified economy, human capital investment, and environmental preservation. She mentioned Qatar's partnership with the UN in implementing the Doha Program of Action 2022-2031 and the agreements signed by the Qatar Fund For Development to build resilience and tackle food insecurity.
UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock described global hunger as a humanitarian tragedy and warned of the impact of rising global temperatures on food security. Brazilian Minister of Social Development Wellington Dias highlighted Brazil's success in combating hunger and poverty, while Spanish Secretary of State for International Cooperation Eva Granados praised the alliance's model for international cooperation.
The alliance, within a year of its launch, has fostered partnerships in countries like Ethiopia and Haiti, combining efforts from various sectors to address hunger and poverty through integrated national programs.
