Washington: Former Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney, died Tuesday at the age of 84 from complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, his family stated.
According to Qatar News Agency, Cheney served as Vice President under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009. He had previously been elected as a member of Congress from Wyoming and also served as Secretary of Defense.
During his tenure, Cheney sought to expand the powers of the presidency, believing that the office had been weakened since the Watergate scandal that removed President Richard Nixon.
He strengthened the influence of the Vice President's office by forming a National Security team, which often acted as an independent center of power within the administration.
