Doha: France's presidency (Elysee), Wednesday, called for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to conduct a military exercise in Greenland, expressing Paris's readiness to take part in it. This comes at a time when US President Donald Trump has once again expressed his desire to annex the Danish autonomous territory.
According to Qatar News Agency, Denmark together with other NATO members, including France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, had previously sent military forces to Greenland on a reconnaissance mission outside of the alliance's formal framework. This action excluded the US, which angered the US President and led him to threaten his country's allies participating in the mission with having new tariffs imposed on them reaching up to 25 percent.
Trump maintains that mineral-rich Greenland is of importance to the security of the US and NATO in the face of Russia and China. In turn, France believes that holding a formal NATO exercise on the island would allow Washington to be involved and would demonstrate that Europe is taking security in the Arctic seriously.
