Geneva: HE Chairperson of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) and Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah called on all UN Member States to ensure the consistent application of international law to achieve meaningful dialogue and effective cooperation.
According to Qatar News Agency, in her speech at the opening of the GANHRI Annual Meeting and Conference in Geneva, Her Excellency emphasized the need for global leadership to protect both current and future generations amidst challenges that threaten the multilateral system and the foundations of international law. She highlighted that international law has always been a structure that provides protection to humanity.
She further explained that the GANHRI meeting with partners from the United Nations and civil society provides a platform to reflect on their roles during these challenging times. The meeting is an opportunity to renew calls for steadfast global leadership that supports universal principles of international law to confront crises with unified determination.
Al Attiyah pointed out that the interconnected challenges of today, such as humanitarian disasters, climate change, discrimination, and conflicts, require a united approach. These issues must be addressed through dialogue and cooperation, with a commitment to international law, emphasizing the importance of unity and shared commitment to human rights.
She also noted that this year's session focuses on the rights of women and girls, gender equality, and the role of NHRIs, marking the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. Despite progress in promoting the rights of women and girls, more efforts are needed to ensure equal enjoyment of rights for all.
Al Attiyah also highlighted the crucial role of NHRIs in human rights protection and promotion, which can only be achieved through mutual support, shared learning, and collective action. In discussions with heads of GANHRI regional networks in Africa, the Americas, the Asia Pacific, and Europe, she reviewed the agenda of the GANHRI Annual Meeting and Conference and the outcomes of the previous meeting held in Doha.
