German Exports Surge in December as Industrial Production Declines

Berlin: German exports saw a significant increase in December 2025, while industrial production declined during the same month, presenting two contrasting indicators of the German economy's performance at the end of last year.

According to Qatar News Agency, official data from the German Federal Statistical Office showed that exports rose by 4.0 percent in December 2025 compared to November, reaching EUR 133.3 billion, and by 2.7 percent compared to December 2024. The data also indicated that imports increased by 1.4 percent month-on-month to EUR 116.2 billion, and by 5.6 percent compared to the same month of the previous year.

The Statistical Office added that the trade surplus reached approximately EUR 17.1 billion in December 2025, while the surplus for the year 2025 reached approximately EUR 202.8 billion. Conversely, the Federal Statistical Office explained that real output in the manufacturing sector declined by 1.9 percent in December 2025 compared to November, and by 0.6 percent compared to December 2024.

The office indicated that the monthly decline in December was primarily due to decreases in the automotive industry (8.9 percent) and the machinery industry (6.8 percent), offset by increases in some sectors, including the manufacture of metal products (3.2 percent) and the manufacture of other vehicles such as aircraft, ships, trains, and military vehicles (10.5 percent). It noted that overall construction output rose by 3.0 percent in December, while industrial productivity fell by 3.0 percent, and power generation declined by 1.8 percent compared to the previous month.
