Ahmedabad: Germany and India have taken a significant step towards enhancing their bilateral ties by signing a "Declaration of Intent" focused on bolstering security cooperation, particularly through closer collaboration within their defense industries.

According to Qatar News Agency, the declaration was signed during a press conference in Ahmedabad, where German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of expediting negotiations for a free trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and India. Chancellor Merz expressed optimism that the agreement could be finalized by the end of January, coinciding with the anticipated visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Ant³nio Costa to India.

Chancellor Merz highlighted efforts to establish legal and structured pathways for Indian talent migration through dual training and study programs, alongside partnerships between universities and companies. The German government, in a press release, reiterated its commitment to strengthening ties with India on security matters, emphasizing Berlin's desire for deeper collaboration.

The German government also stressed its efforts to prevent Indian companies from bypassing the restrictive measures imposed on Russia. Additionally, both nations agreed to enhance cooperation in vital sectors, including rare earth minerals, artificial intelligence, digitalization, and human capital development. Memoranda of understanding were signed to advance collaboration in health and innovation sectors as well.

The visit of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to India underscores the commitment of both countries to developing a comprehensive partnership that addresses key global challenges and fosters mutual growth and development.
