Germany Urges Trump to Use Influence on Russia for Ukraine Peace

Doha: Germany called on US President Donald Trump to increase pressure on Russia to end the war in Ukraine following his successful mediation to end the war in the Gaza Strip.

According to Qatar News Agency, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated during a meeting with his Bulgarian counterpart Georgi Georgiev in Sofia that Trump has made a decisive contribution to the agreement on the Gaza Strip. He emphasized that "Germany is calling on him to continue his efforts to secure negotiations between Russia and Ukraine."

Wadephul highlighted the German government's expectations of the US administration, citing President Trump's demonstrated interest in global peace agreements. He expressed Germany's readiness to support Trump in initiating a peace process in Ukraine, stressing the importance of taking action before large-scale fighting resumes.

Since taking office, the US president has actively sought to end the war in Ukraine. Efforts have included dispatching special envoy Steve Witkoff to Russia and holding meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin to broker a peace agreement. However, these attempts have faced challenges due to significant differences in the positions of the involved countries.
