Berlin: Renewable energy output in Germany fell in the first quarter of 2025, as windless months and low rainfall dragged down production from wind and hydropower plants, according to preliminary industry figures.
According to Qatar News Agency, between January and March, wind turbines, solar parks, and other renewable sources produced 63.5 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, marking a decrease of about 16% compared to the first quarter of 2024. These projections were provided by the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research and the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW).
Electricity generation from hard coal, lignite, and gas-fired power plants saw an increase, the report indicated. Additionally, electricity imports rose to help meet the demand.
The report highlighted that offshore wind power decreased by 31% and onshore by 22%, as February and March experienced minimal wind. Furthermore, low rainfall contributed to a reduction in hydropower output. However, solar generation experienced a year-on-year rise of about 32%.
Overall, renewable sources accounted for 47% of electricity consumption in the first quarter, maintaining their importance in meeting Germany's climate targets.
