Germany’s Merz Calls for Europe’s Defensive Independence Amid Global Instability

Berlin: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Europeans to become more independent in light of global upheavals, stressing that Europe must become capable of defending itself with its own resources following changes in transatlantic relations.

According to Qatar News Agency, Merz stated that Europe is experiencing "probably the greatest period of political uncertainty and instability," marking a significant departure from the past. He highlighted the resurgence of great powers prioritizing power politics over international regulations, often showing disdain for established rules.

Merz emphasized the potential impact of a united and determined Europe on the global stage. He expressed belief in a "sovereign, free, peaceful and economically prosperous Europe," with Germany prepared to lead the way.

He also addressed the need for Europe to enhance its defensive capabilities, improve the competitiveness of its economy, and achieve technological independence. Merz remarked that changes in transatlantic relations require Europe to adapt swiftly to maintain a significant role in the global transformation phase.
