Global Community Unites on International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

Doha: The world will observe the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Thursday, June 26, in accordance with a United Nations General Assembly resolution adopted in December 1987. This day aims to raise public awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and its negative effects on individuals, families, and communities, as well as to strengthen prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation efforts.

According to Qatar News Agency, drug abuse is a complex global challenge that affects the lives of millions around the world-ranging from individuals suffering from drug use disorders to communities grappling with the consequences of drug trafficking and organized crime. In a message marking the occasion, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated, "The global illicit drug trade continues to exact a devastating toll: claiming lives, ravaging public health services, and fueling violence and organized crime."

Guterres emphasized the increasing potency and danger of substances involved in drug trafficking, highlighting the exploitation of vulnerable groups, particularly women and youth, by criminal networks that profit massively from the illicit drug trade. He noted, "This year, we shine a light on prevention as the most essential strategy for halting the flow of drugs that fuels organized crime worldwide. We must reduce demand through investing in education, treatment, harm-reduction measures, and care."

The UN Secretary-General outlined strategies to combat drug abuse by targeting production facilities, disrupting trafficking networks, and cutting off financial resources to criminal organizations, all while upholding human rights.

The State of Qatar has adopted a comprehensive and integrated approach to combating drug abuse, in line with national legislation and international conventions, updating laws and regulations, forming committees for coordination, and developing a national strategy focused on prevention, rehabilitation, and reintegration. Qatar has also strengthened partnerships with regional and international organizations and implemented awareness programs across various societal segments.

Qatar's commitment is further exemplified by the establishment of the Naufar Center for addiction treatment, a leading facility in the Middle East that provides treatment and rehabilitation services according to global medical standards. Naufar aligns with the Qatar National Vision 2030 by offering comprehensive healthcare, psychological support, and community rehabilitation, while promoting research in addiction and public health.

The GCC General Secretariat also conducted activities for Gulf anti-drug week, coinciding with the international observance, to demonstrate the GCC countries' dedication to unified action against drug abuse.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking calls for intensified efforts to create drug-free communities and serves as an opportunity to reinforce humanitarian values of compassion, awareness, and community support. The message remains clear: recovery is achievable, support is crucial, and collaborative efforts are key to a healthier, safer future.
