Doha: Qatar Museums (QM) has announced that internationally acclaimed architect and designer India Mahdavi will serve as chair of the jury for the 2026 Design Doha Prize, a biennial initiative celebrating design talent from Qatar, the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. Mahdavi will lead a panel of local and international experts tasked with selecting and recognizing outstanding achievements in contemporary design.
According to Qatar News Agency, Acting Director of Design Doha Biennale, Fahad Al Obaidly, said Mahdavi embodies the essence of the event, which aims to celebrate cultural dialogue, craftsmanship, and optimistic design perspectives. "Her work transcends geographical boundaries, transforming emotions, colours, and forms into a universal language that conveys beauty and a sense of belonging," he noted.
Known for her distinctive use of colour, form, and cultural storytelling, Mahdavi has completed projects across multiple global venues, blending architecture, interior and furniture design with a playful modern elegance. Based in Paris, she draws inspiration from her Iranian and Egyptian heritage and global upbringing, giving her work a unique multicultural signature.
Expressing her pride in the appointment, Mahdavi said: "It is an honor to chair the Design Doha Prize jury and work alongside leading voices within the international design community. The Biennale is a symbol of evolution, a meeting point of craft and knowledge, and a platform to envision the future of design."
The prize, scheduled for April 14, 2026, will recognize innovation and craftsmanship across four categories: craft, product design, furniture design, and emerging talent. Winners will receive QAR 200,000 each, alongside mentorship and collaborative opportunities to enhance their creative skills.
The award presentation will form part of the opening week of the Design Doha Biennale, which will feature a wide program of exhibitions, lectures, and initiatives highlighting design's transformative potential in shaping society and culture.
