Washington, Google has announced the launch of new updates that facilitate the process of setting up two-factor authentication 2FA, also known as the process of two-step verification 2SV, making it easy and safe for users to protect their accounts. Workspace blog streamlines 2SV activation, offering FIDO1/FIDO2 credentials, time-based codes, hardware keys, and admin policies for passkey usage. Google is rolling out a major update to its two-factor authentication (2FA) process. It is adding a new method to enable 2FA setup by using second step methods such as Google Authenticator, or a hardware security key. At present, users have to provide their phone number before being able to add an authenticator app. Google has simplified how users turn on 2-Step Verification (2SV), which will streamline the process, and make it easier for admins to enforce 2SV policies in their organizations. With the new update, OTP-based verification does not remain a mandatory step for setting up 2FA.This means that users can ei ther choose a time-based code generated by an authenticator application or they can connect a physical security key. As per the blog update, users with hardware security keys will have two options to add them to their account on the Passkeys and security Keyes page. If you have a Workspace account associated with an organization and want to use a passkey, you must sign in with a password as well, depending on the specific settings created by the associated organization. Google said it has also modified how turning off two-factor authentication works, as previously turning off two-factor authentication meant removing all associated security measures, such as backup codes, authentication application links, and automatically linked phone numbers. These associated security measures now remain in place even after you turn off two-factor authentication. Source: Qatar News Agency
