HBKU Launches WTO Chair in Qatar

Doha: HE Minister of State for Foreign Trade Affairs Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Sayed voiced his pride in the World Trade Organization's (WTO) selection of the College of Law at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) to host the WTO Chair in Qatar, stressing that this step represents a qualitative addition to the academic and research landscape in the State of Qatar, and reflects the confidence of international institutions in national capabilities and the supportive environment for research and innovation provided by Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development.

According to Qatar News Agency, this announcement was made during the inauguration ceremony of the WTO Chair in Qatar, organized by HBKU at Education City. The event was attended by several academic leaders, representatives of international organizations, and a select group of researchers and students. This initiative marks a pivotal moment in Qatar's journey to strengthen its role as a contributor to the future of global trade, aligning with the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy (2024-2030).

His Excellency emphasized the significance of this achievement in fostering cooperation between higher education institutions, government entities, and international organizations. Such collaboration aims to develop knowledge-based, research-driven trade policies, enhancing national research capabilities and enabling young Qatari talents to effectively address global economic challenges.

Further, Dr. Al Sayed noted that the WTO Chairs Program serves as a strategic platform for exchanging experiences, creating trade policies, and supporting economic diversification efforts. It highlights the importance of tapping into global transformations in digital economy, innovation, and trade integration, thus contributing to building a competitive and sustainable knowledge-based national economy.

In his closing remarks, HE the Minister congratulated HBKU on this significant academic milestone, commending the efforts of the university's academics. He also expressed gratitude to local and international partners who played a role in the success of this initiative. Dr. Al Sayed expressed hope that this chair will become a new scientific beacon, enhancing Qatar's position as a global hub for thought and policy formulation in trade and sustainable development fields.

This launch is part of the WTO Chairs Program, which seeks to bolster academic research, education, and training in international trade and foster cooperation between academic institutions and decision-makers globally.
