Doha: Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) revealed that its National Mental Health Helpline has been receiving over 2,000 calls per month since its launch in April 2020. The helpline service acts as the primary access point for individuals seeking supportive and confidential mental health care.
According to Qatar News Agency, the National Mental Health Helpline is operated by HMC's Mental Health Services Department and is staffed by a team of professionals, including nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, and allied health professionals. The helpline provides rapid access to necessary support, especially during mental health crises, and is accessible to all individuals.
The service's role extends beyond crisis support, offering guidance and advice on mental health services available to individuals and their families. It also serves as an access point for specialized support in areas such as women's mental health and addiction support, making it a comprehensive resource for anyone facing mental health challenges.
Dr. Majid Al Abdulla, Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at HMC, stated in a press release that the National Mental Health Helpline serves as a vital lifeline for individuals across Qatar, offering immediate access to necessary care. He emphasized that timely support through the helpline helps individuals address their mental health issues early, preventing conditions from worsening.
Katja Warwick-Smith, Assistant Executive Director of Clinical Service Development at the Mental Health Services Department, noted that the helpline services achieve high satisfaction rates of up to 90 percent. Callers have provided positive feedback about the service, which is available in multiple languages, including Arabic, English, Tagalog, Hindi, Urdu, and Malayalam.
The National Mental Health Helpline, accessible at 16000, offers confidential, free, and efficient support to all residents of Qatar, contributing to the mental well-being of the society.
