Indonesia Faces Uproar as Ex-Soldier Pleads for Citizenship Restoration After Fighting for Russia

Indonesia: Controversy erupts as former Indonesian marine, Satria Arta Kumbara, seeks help to terminate his contract with the Russian Ministry of Defence and restore his Indonesian citizenship. His appeal comes after a video statement went viral, amassing over 1 million views and stirring a heated debate across Indonesia. Kumbara’s plea emphasizes his ignorance of the consequences that led to the revocation of his citizenship and his desire to return home.

According to France24.com, Kumbara first made headlines in May 2025 after posting images on TikTok of himself in both Indonesian and Russian military uniforms. The caption on the post suggested he was actively engaged in combat in Ukraine. His journey to Russia was documented through various TikTok posts, highlighting his travels through Malaysia and Qatar before arriving in Russia in March 2025. Subsequent posts on TikTok and Facebook depicted him in Russian military attire, though the exact locations of his deployment remain unclear.

Kumbara has defended his decisions, stating his motivations were financially driven and not treasonous. In a video, he criticized the corruption in Indonesia and expressed frustration at being harassed for seeking employment abroad. His statements have sparked a polarized debate within Indonesia, with some citizens empathizing with his plight amidst a challenging job market and widespread corruption.

The Indonesian government confirmed Kumbara’s loss of citizenship in May 2025 due to his enlistment with the Russian military. While Kumbara claims ignorance of this legal repercussion, his case has divided public opinion. Radityo Dharmaputra from Airlangga University notes the broader context of Indonesia’s historical ties with Russia and anti-Western sentiments, which contribute to some public support for Kumbara.

The Indonesian Navy and other authorities have distanced themselves from Kumbara, emphasizing legal processes and urging citizens against following his example. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice are involved in deliberations regarding Kumbara’s request for citizenship restoration, though no decisions have been made. The government stresses the complexity of the issue due to legal and strategic military considerations.
