Baghdad: Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani affirmed on Tuesday that Iraq's relationship with the United States must be based on partnership rather than unilateral decisions. He emphasized the need for collaboration and dialogue to foster a more balanced and mutually beneficial relationship between the two countries.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Prime Minister announced that a small unit of US military advisers will remain at Ain al-Asad Air Base in Iraq to monitor the Syrian border. He noted that the presence of ISIS no longer constitutes a major threat within Iraq. However, estimates by the Ministry of Defense suggest that between 400 and 500 ISIS members still operate in isolated areas along the Syrian border and in the northeast of the country.
Al-Sudani also highlighted the ongoing instability in the region, which he attributed to the lack of a just solution to the Palestinian cause. He warned that events would continue to recur until this issue is resolved and expressed his support for US President Donald Trump's plan regarding Gaza.
In addition to security concerns, the Prime Minister pointed out Iraq's progress in reforming its financial system and emphasized the country's efforts in security cooperation with the new authorities in Damascus. These efforts focus on counterterrorism and drug control, reflecting Iraq's commitment to regional stability and security.
