Israeli Incursions into Syria Reach Record High in September

Accra:The UN Human Rights Office reported that Israeli military incursions into Syria reached a record high in September, with approximately 280 incidents documented. This figure represents the highest monthly total recorded this year and raises concerns about the impact on Syrian civilians.

According to Qatar News Agency, UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Shabia Mantoo highlighted that information received indicated 49 Syrians remained detained by Israeli forces, although this number could not be independently verified. The documented incursions involved home raids, movement restrictions, arbitrary detention, harassment, and the destruction of livelihoods. Released detainees have reported experiences of prolonged detention, torture, and ill-treatment.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk expressed apprehension regarding the impact of these military actions on civilians in southern Syria. He called for an end to intimidation and restrictions and urged for prompt, impartial investigations into incidents involving civilian casualties.

The UN office emphasized the necessity for detainees to be afforded legal safeguards and treated with dignity, asserting that no one should be held without a lawful basis.

Additionally, the UN Security Council has reaffirmed its support for the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in southern Syria and has urged all states to respect Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity.
