Italy Confirms No Troop Deployment for Ukraine Peacekeeping Mission

Doha: The Italian government confirmed Wednesday that it has no plans to send troops to participate in a potential peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, adding: “We will not participate in a potential military force on the ground in Ukraine.” This came in a memorandum issued by the Italian Prime Minister’s Office following a meeting between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, her deputies Antonio Tajani and Matteo Salvini, as well as Defense Minister Guido Crosetto.

According to Qatar News Agency, the memorandum noted that the issue of implementing and monitoring the ceasefire in Ukraine was also discussed, where a potential role for the United Nations has emerged, something the Italian government has supported for some time.

The meeting also emphasized the commitment to building strong and effective security guarantees for Ukraine, in cooperation with European and Western partners and with the United States, based on the Euro-Atlantic context, and also on the basis of a model that could partially follow what is stipulated in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, regarding joint defense, a premise that is attracting increasing interest among international partners.
