Tokyo: The Japanese broad-market index TOPIX touched a record high on Wednesday before losing momentum, as investors awaited decisions by the Bank of Japan and the Federal Reserve (the US central bank).
According to Qatar News Agency, TOPIX reached an unprecedented 3,408.99 points in early trading before losing steam and closing up by only 0.1 percent, at 3,389.02. Meanwhile, the Nikkei 225 index fell 0.1 percent to close at 50,602.80 points.
The weak yen proved a positive factor for car-manufacturing companies: shares of Honda Motor rose 3.3 percent and those of Toyota Motor rose 1.6 percent.
On the Nikkei, 147 stocks advanced while 75 declined. The biggest gainer was Dowa Holdings, which jumped 6.3 percent, followed by the share of TOTO Ltd. (toilet-maker), which rose 4.8 percent.
As for the biggest losers: the share of drugmaker Shionogi and Co. dropped 4.7 percent, followed by the semiconductor-chip-related company Lasertec Inc., which fell 4.2 percent.
