Lebanese Premier, German President Review Reforms’ Progress, Post-UNIFIL Phase

Beirut: Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier discussed the Lebanese government's progress in carrying out administrative and financial reforms, in addition to its efforts in controlling arms under state authority. During their meeting on Monday in Beirut, both sides also addressed the post-United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) phase.

According to Qatar News Agency, the discussions focused on Lebanon's ongoing reform agenda, which includes significant administrative and financial measures aimed at stabilizing the country's economy and governance. The leaders examined the effectiveness of these reforms in enhancing transparency and accountability within Lebanese institutions.

In addition to the reform progress, Prime Minister Salam and President Steinmeier deliberated on Lebanon's strategy for managing arms within the nation. Ensuring that weapons remain under the control of state authorities is a critical component of Lebanon's security framework and is essential for maintaining stability in the region.

The dialogue also ventured into the implications of a post-UNIFIL phase. As the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon approaches its conclusion, both leaders considered the future of peacekeeping efforts and the role of international support in maintaining peace and security in southern Lebanon.
