Lebanon: Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raji called on the European Union (EU) to press Israel to halt its daily attacks on Lebanon, withdraw unconditionally from all occupied territories, and release prisoners. This appeal was made during a meeting with Charles Fries, Deputy Secretary-General for Peace, Security and Defence in the European External Action Service.

According to Qatar News Agency, a statement issued by the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that discussions focused on ways for the EU to support Lebanon, particularly by strengthening the capabilities of the Lebanese Army. The aim is to enable the army to perform its duties under UN Security Council Resolution 1701, complete its deployment in the south, and implement the plan to restrict arms to the state. The talks also addressed efforts to maintain security and stability throughout the country.

The minister emphasized the significance of ongoing support for the Lebanese Armed Forces, which are expected to take on major responsibilities after the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mandate ends in 2026.

Fries, on behalf of the EU, affirmed continued support for Lebanon and its armed forces, suggesting several ideas for potential EU contributions to assist Lebanon in various fields following the conclusion of UNIFIL’s mission. He praised the key reforms undertaken by the Lebanese government, emphasizing that these would help strengthen Lebanese-European relations, particularly concerning the financial assistance the EU can provide, and elevate the partnership to a comprehensive strategic relationship.

Furthermore, the European official reiterated the EU’s support for Lebanon’s position on the Syrian displacement issue, underscoring the necessity of ensuring the return of displaced persons in accordance with international humanitarian law.
